A group from the Elephant party calling its self Sunyani West Constituency NPP Communicators is accusing the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah for sewing a seed of disunity among party members after the appointment of Hon. Martin Obeng as the District Chief Executive.
Mr. Kofi Peprah, an NPP communicator at a press conference said, it all began with what he called the “Regent declaration”. He said on 29th December 2016 after the general election, the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West met with party executives to plead with them not to contest the Sunyani West Party chairman for the position of the DCE for Sunyani West.
“He has promised Mr. Kusi Boadum that he will do all in his power to make him the DCE for Sunyani West District so he did not want any of the executives to compete with him for the post” he disclosed.
According to him, during the filling for nomination for the DCE post, no constituency executive officer filed. In all eight party members submitted their documents to be considered for the position.
Mr. Peprah said during the vetting, all the party executives went to support Chairman Kusi Boadum as the MP wanted. He noted that after the interview three party members’ names were submitted in Accra for the final interview at the flagstaff house.
He said when Mr. Martin Obeng’s name was announced as the DCE nominee for the District all hell broke loose from the camp of Hon Ignatius Baffour Awuah.
Mr. Peprah revealed that, on the 16th May 2017, the election for the confirmation of the Presidents nominee Hon. Martin Obeng by the Assembly members was met with heavy security presence because the constituency chairman and the MP were bent on making sure the President’s nominee does not get the required numbers.
He said through to their words, the nominee got 35 out of the 36 needed so was not confirmed for the first time. The communicator said before 26th May 2017 which was the day scheduled for the second confirmation, the president through the regional minister, Kwaku Asomah Cheremeh revoked the appointment of some nine government appointee at the District Assembly and nine other people were appointed. “Hon Obeng was confirmed in the second attempt”, he said.
Mr. Peprah at the press conference said they thought everything was over after the DCE’s confirmation. “Unfortunately, during the conference of the constituency of Sunyani West to make input into the amendment of the party’s constitution in the presence of the DCE, the MP, Hon. Baffour Awuah told the gathering that he had wanted chairman Kusi Boadum to be the DCE and not Martin Obeng, we were all shocked by his pronouncement.
They are also accusing the constituency party Chairman Mr. Kusi Boadum for forming a cabal against the DCE after he failed in the contest of the position to the later.
Mr. Peprah says currently there is division among the party executives in the constituency. He is therefore calling on the national executives to step in to bring peace to the constituency to avoid deep cracks in the constituency.
