Update: 8 arrested in Kintampo youth, police clash

One person was yesterday shot dead while 8 others were arrested with several others sustaining various degrees of injuries after the Dega Land Association and Mo youth based in Kintampo North in the Bono East Region besieged the Kintampo Divisional Police Station demanding the release of seven persons arrested by the police.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Police Service (GPS), Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong in an interview on “Ark Anopa Bosua Kaseabo” indicated that the deceased was shot dead after he stabbed a military officer who was controlling the crowd and later attempted to snatch his riffle from him.

He added that the injured were also sent to the Kintampo Government Hospital.

The BAR PRO further explained that the arrest was as a result of the decision of the youth group to demand ownership of the Kintampo waterfalls and locking the facility including the walkway commissioned by President Akufo-Addo on Monday April 15, 2019.

“The Police attempted to transfer the suspects to the Police headquarters in Sunyani and the groups upon hearing of the police decision blocked roads leading to the police station leaving people stranded without alternate routes” he added.

“The Police had to call for reinforcement of military personnel and in the process the deceased stabbed one of the military personnel in the hand and later attempted to snatch his riffle hence the shooting”

Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong further added that the police later succeed in transferring the suspects to the police headquarters in Sunyani.
