Mahama Stops V/R Tour; Visit Wuogon Shooting Victims

Former President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the violence meted out to members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election on Thursday, 31 January 2019.

Some macho men in NSC-branded t-shirts who are suspected to be members of a vigilante group attacked some voters at the La-Bawaleshie Presby JHS polling station and fired at them.

According to report, macho men, numbering about 200, got furious when some voters started taking pictures of them and videoing them.

According to Fred Agbenyo, the macho men destroyed polling station Basic One and carried the ballot boxes away.

Mr Mahama, who was speaking to Ho Central Constituency delegates, indicated that he will cut short his campaign tour to visit the victims of the shooting incident.

“I am very disturbed by reports that we are receiving from Accra in respect of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election,” Mr Mahama noted.

He said he “will return to Accra today to familiarise myself with what has happened and see what we can do to help ameliorate the situation”.

He explained that the reports he has received indicate that “some vigilante personnel attacked the house of our parliamentary candidate in the constituency and they were in possession of firearms. They fired and a number of our colleagues were hurt”.

He continued: “There was another incident where they beat up several of our members and threw them into police station cells even though they were pleading and they were in critical condition, so, our lawyers had to rush there to bail them and rush them to the hospital”.
