The chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, says all is set for the referendum on Thursday December 27 for the creation of new regions.
Addressing a media conference, EC boss stated that special voting allows key professionals linked to an election like security officers, Electoral Commission officials and journalists to vote ahead of the main election will be held on Monday 24th for ten thousand one hundred and twenty-seven voters.
In all two million two hundred and sixty thousand seven hundred and twenty four (2,260,724) voters are expected to go to the poll out of which sixty-seven thousand six hundred and fifty-two are for proxy.
Mrs. Mensa said the Commission had identified some flashpoints in the voting districts and has notified the police. She added that 19,454 officials had been engaged across all districts and regions for the exercise.A
The head of the election management body said that said all ballot papers and Biometric Verification Devices are ready. The result of the referendum is to be announced at the various regional referendum centres.
A minimum voter turnout of 50% of the electorate in the affected areas is required and in addition 80% of this turn-out need to vote ‘YES’ to validate the referendum.A
On the choice of colours for the voting of YES and NO, the commission said the aim for yellow and brown is to dissociate the exercise from any party affiliation.
