The Brong Ahafo Regional Mental Health Coordinator, Mr. Joseph Yere has said that government has neglected the mental health sector in Ghana.
According to him, there are no funds and drugs because donor partners like World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department for International Development have stopped funding mental health since Ghana became a middle income country.
He added that unlike diabetes, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS patients, mentally challenged persons are not on the National Health Insurance Scheme.
According to him, medical supplies to mental patients do not get to them on time, which usually compounds their situation.
He blamed successive governments for these challenges since they fail to deliver after promising to give much attention to mental health.
Mr. Yere said efforts to get government to give attention to mental health have proven futile and wondered if really it is part of the government’s budget since the 2019 budget read by the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta did not capture mental health.
He added that Brong Ahafo citizens in the diaspora have been assisting mental health in the Region but their donations do not reach all the districts.
He feared that the situation of mental health patients can worsen if nothing is done immediately.
