Samsung could be on course to reveal a foldable smartphone next month, according to rumours being spread through the tech press.
It’s believed to be called the Samsung Galaxy X and has been talked about for eons – ever since patent documents emerged showing early sketches for the design.
Now TechRadar has picked up on a tweet from Samsung Mobile promoting a developer conference due to be held in November. The site reckons it’s the perfect setting for Samsung to reveal its mythical folding phone.
‘While it may not mean much, we’re quite confident the electronics giant has teased the reveal of the Samsung Galaxy X,’ the site wrote.
‘It’s highly likely that the handset, or at least a prototype, will be on display at the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco next month.’
TechRadar also points out that this gels nicely with comments from Samsung’s mobile boss DJ Koh, who said the phone will be revealed towards the end of 2018, but won’t go on sale until 2019. Koh previously told CNBC that it’s ‘time to deliver’ on the device after research showed people are very interested. ‘You can use most of the uses … on foldable status.
But when you need to browse or see something, then you may need to unfold it. But even unfolded, what kind of benefit does that give compared to the tablet?
If the unfolded experience is the same as the tablet, why would they (consumers) buy it?,’ Koh told the site at the IFA tech conference in Berlin earlier this year.
We originally weren’t expecting this device to break cover until at least next year.
But the South Korean company may have decided to bring it in earlier to try and stimulate some growth in the mobile division. According to CNBC, sales fell 20% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2018.
What’s more, there’s a lot of competition around at the moment. Apple has launched three new iPhones while Huawei and Google also have new phones out at the moment.
OnePlus is set to launch another one pretty soon as well. Samsung may just decide to trump them all with the introduction of a new form factor. Time will tell.
