The Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinator for the Girl Child, Madam Bernice Nkum has lamented the increasing rate of child marriages in the region despite efforts by her outfit to end the menace.
According to her, the situation still remains a major challenge affecting the development of the girl child in the Region.
Speaking to Kwabena Obeng Akrofi (the Royal Servant) on Ark in the Morning on International Day for the Girl Child, which falls today, Madam Bernice Nkum attributed the increasing rate of the menace to lack of social needs such as sanitaries and other logistics to support the girl child in the region and in the country at large.
She lamented parents have failed to take responsibility of their children compelling them to give these young girls out for marriage to men who are old enough to be their fathers so that they (parents) will have the chance to escape their responsibilities and benefit from the girls in return.
Madam Bernice Nkum specifically mentioned the Kintampo Municipality, Banda, Tain, Atebubu, Nkoranza Municipal as areas where the menace is happening in higher numbers.
She also mentioned Yamfo in the Tano North Municipality where a girl child was rescued from child marriage by a joint team of her outfit and the Ghana Education Service two weeks ago.
Madam Nkum further touched on what her outfit is doing to support the girl child in the Brong Ahafo Region. She said her outfit is training them on how to make their own sanitary pads among others.
Finally, she charged the various assemblies to factor in the girl child in constructing places of convenience in schools and called on parents and all major stakeholders to join hands in helping the girl child.
